এপিজে বাংলা সাহিত্য উৎসব

Park Street Heritage Walk (Paye Paye Park Street) was arranged as part of Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsob. It coincided with All Souls’ Day which is held annually on 2^nd November. Incidentally, the Halloween day falls on 31st October and All Saints’ Day is on 1 November.

The original name of Park Street is Burial Ground Road. So we started our walk from The Lower Circular Road Cemetery. We laid a wreath on the grave of Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Madhusudan Dutta is the father of the Bengali sonnet.

The Cemetery contains remains of memorable personalities like

• Sri Haren Mookerjee – the first Bengali Governor of West Bengal & a Scholar and Patriot
• The Rev. Lal Behari Shah – founder of the first Blind School in India
• F. Andrews –  a close associate and adviser of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindra Nath Tagore
• Drink Water Bethune – the Educationist who introduced Women Education for the first time in India

Then we visited the South Park Street Cemetry and by that time it had become dark. We were feeling eerie. The marble plaque at the gate reads “South Park Street Cemetery, Opened: 1769 Closed: 1790”. We walked around a pitch dark South Park Street Cemetery with just the distant moon showing us our way.

Bengal is known for its rich cultural background and its literary attachment. Such a rich heritage needs to be preserved over generation which most of us fail to do, but this legacy can be only carried forward with the acceptance of its essence by the millennial. With an attempt to do so, Oxford Bookstores created India’s pioneering Bangla Literary Festival titled Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsob (ABSU) in 2015. Originally the event started at the Oxford Bookstore, Park Street. And today it has been the 3^rd year for ABSU which has been shifted to a bigger venue of the Apeejay Lawn, all thanks to the love and support for this growing endeavor.

Day 1, 3^rd November 2017 was the inauguration ceremony of ABSU by Shankha Ghosh. Day 2, 4^th November 2017 was the day which was scheduled to have 8 sessions. The very first session of the day was “Bangla Sahitya Quiz” conducted by Saurav Ranjan Dutta. It had first a preliminary round consisting of 8 teams of which the winning team won with a score of 185.

বাংলা ভাষার গল্প, কবিতা, উপন্যাস, সিনেমা, নাটক , সব মিলিয়ে এক অভূতপূর্ব অধিবেশন এর আয়োজন করা হয়েছে, এই এপিজে বাংলা সাহিত্য উৎসবে। তৃতীয় বছরে পদারপনকারী এই উৎসব, বাঙালির অনেক কাছের,অনেক প্রিয়।তাই প্রথম বছর থেকেই এই উৎসব শুধুই জনপ্রিয়তা পেয়েছে তাই নয়,বিশ্ব সাহিত্য চর্চায় এর প্রভাব ছড়িয়েছে অনেকখানি।

এই বছরের সাহিত্য উৎসবের দ্বিতীয় দিনেএর অনুষ্ঠানের প্রথমেই, বাংলা ভাষায় কুইজ সকলের নজর কেড়েছিল।বাংলা সাহিত্য ভিত্তিক প্রশ্নের তালিকা ভাবিয়ে তুলেছিল প্রতিযোগিদের। এরপর ভ্রমণরসিক বাঙালির প্রসঙ্গে, ভ্রমণপিপাসু ভাবনার কথা তুলে ধরলেন নন্দিতা বাগচী, শঙ্কর বোস ও রঙ্গন দত্ত। বাঙালি শুধুমাত্র ভ্রমণরসিক নয়, ভ্রমণপাগল, আর রহস্যপিপাসু।তাই বারবার বাঙালি ফিরে গিয়েছে হিমালয়ের কোলে। বাঙালির ভ্রমণপ্রিয় মনোভাব আজকের নয়, সেই আবুল ফজলের লেখায় ও পাওয়া গেছে এর কথা।

এরই পরবর্তী অধিবেশনে এসেছে ভোজনরসিক বাঙালির প্রসঙ্গ। দেবাশীষ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের সঞ্চালনায়, শিলাদিত্য চৌধুরী, রাজীব ঘোষ ও বিকাশ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের বক্তব্য ছাপ ফেলেছে ভোজনরসিক মনে। বাঙালি মাত্রই ভোজনপ্রিয় কিন্তু একটা কথা আছে না, “খালি পেটে ধর্ম হয় না”, তা ও সত্যিই বটে। ৪০ এর দশক থেকে আজও, বাঙালি তার ভোজনরসিকতা ভোলেনি, তার খাদ্যপ্রীতি, আজও তাকে করে তোলে অনন্য।

এরপর গানে গল্পে পঞ্চকবির গান পরিবেশনায় পরমা দাশগুপ্ত ছিলেন অতুলনীয়, কথনে শ্যামলী আচার্য এর ভূমিকাও উল্লেখযোগ্য।

বাঙালীর সাহিত্যপ্রেমের বরাবরই কোনো তুলনা হয় না। সুখে দুঃখে, হাসি কান্নায় কবিতা-গানের অভাব রবীন্দ্রনাথ কোনোদিন হতে দেননি। জীবনে একবারও কবিতা লিখতে চেষ্টা করেনি এমন বাঙালী আতশ কাচের তলাতেও খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবেনা। জীবনানন্দের বনলতা সেন থেকে সুনীলের নীরা- কবিতাই চিরকাল বাঙালীর প্রেমিকা যোগানের ব্যবস্থা করে এসেছে।

সাহিত্যপ্রেমী বাঙালীর এই বাংলাতেই সাল ২০১৫, অক্টোবর মাসের এক শনিবার সকালে এপিজে বাংলা সাহিত্য উৎসব (ABSU) তার পথ চলা শুরু করে। মহালয়ার তিনদিন আগে দুই বাংলার মাঝের কাঁটাতারকে উপেক্ষা করেই অক্সফোর্ড বুক স্টোরে শুরু হল বাংলা সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতির এক নতুন উদযাপন, শুরু হল নবীন প্রজন্মের কাছে বাংলা সাহিত্যকে পৌঁছে দেওয়ার এক নতুন প্রচেষ্টা, পাশে ছিল পত্রভারতী প্রকাশনী। এই অনুষ্ঠানে মোট সাতটি আলোচনাসভার আয়োজন করা হয়- “পাঠকের জন্য লিখি, না মনের তাগিদে লিখি”, “বিতর্ক না হলে সাহিত্য জনপ্রিয় হয়না”, “সিনেমার সাহিত্য, নাকি সাহিত্যের সিনেমা” এরকম কয়েকটি বিতর্কমূলক ও যুগোপযোগী বিষয় নিয়ে। আলোচনায় ছিলেন শঙ্খ ঘোষ, সমরেশ মজুমদার, শ্রীজাত, নবনীতা দেবসেন, ইমদাদুল হক মিলন, শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায়, তিলোত্তমা মজুমদার ও আরও অনেক বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিত্ব। দিনের শেষ অধিবেশনে বরুণ চন্দের পরিচালনায় নচিকেতা, সুরজিৎ ও কালিকাপ্রসাদের “সার্থক আধুনিক গান, সার্থক কবিতা”-র আলোচনা দিয়ে শেষ হল একদিনের এই সাহিত্যানুষ্ঠান।

I love to explore the heritage of Kolkata. So when this invitation came from the Apeejay group for a literary heritage tour as a curtain-raiser to their Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsob (a Bengali literature festival) organized by Oxford Bookstore, the heritage book den and Patra Bharati, an old publication house, I agreed to it. It was a tour of the houses of some of the most illustrious names in Bengal’s literary history.

On 10th October Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsav 2015 kick started through heritage literary walk. The meeting point was Maniktala HDFC Bank Bus Stand, time was 7:30 am sharp. Early morning heading towards Maniktala, when I was reached saw maximum known face, that was awesome felling when you walk your fellow bloggers, photographers, friends, mentors like Subhadip Mukherjee, Indrajit Das, Soumya Shankar Ghosal, Lopamudra Talukdar,  Sumit Surai, Indrajit Lahiri, Srotoswini Svetlana Baghawan, Rajib Dutta, Deepanjan Ghosh, Preeti Roychoudhury, Sammya Brata etc. This Literary Walk organised by Streets of Calcutta for Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsav 2015. Most importantly Wikipedia also part of this  Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsav 2015.

As part of the Apeejay Bangla Sahitya Utsav 2016, on Sunday, 16th October, Oxford Bookstore, Park Street, along with Patra Bharati, organised a literary heritage bus tour. City heritage and travel blogger Rangan Datta lead the tour which started from Apeejay House, Park Street around 2PM.

I was invited to be a part of the tour, and being a heritage enthusiast and bookworm I was eager too. Our first stop was the Calcutta Police Museum.

I was privileged enough to lead a group of about 60 eminent Kolkatans, including eminent writer and columnist Ranjan Bandhopadhyay, through the winding streets of north Kolkata past the houses of stalwarts of Bengali literature.

The tour stared from the Apeejay House in Park Street at about 2 pm, with Let Us Goas the heritage tour partner.

The first stop was the Kolkata Police Museum, located near Maniktala. The building was constructed in 1814 and served as the residence of Raja Rammohan Roy, the father of Bengal Renaissance. Rammohan lived in this house till his departure for England in 1830.
